For the eighteenth time Kino Pod Baranami organises the annual summer film festival Letnie Tanie Kinobranie, filled with the best films of recent months and cinema classics. The program includes over 160 films arranged in 9 thematic weeks with the motto The planets go wild. Screenings will take place at both Kino Pod Baranami and – from July 19 – in the big auditorium at Małopolska Garden of Arts. Additional open-air screenings are held in the garden of Manggha Museum. The festival lasts from 28 June to 29 August.
Every year summer film festival Letnie Tanie Kinobranie is an opportunity to catch up with new productions and revisit favourite titles. In the programme one can find hits of the recent months, but also smaller film gems that were easy to miss in cinemas. The motto of this year's edition is THE PLANETS GO WILD.
This year's Kinobranie shows the entire Solar System. Each of the nine weeks represents one of the planets revolving around the Sun, and the Sun itself has its own week - says Marynia Gierat, director of Kino Pod Baranami. The theme of each week is determined by the features attributed to the ancient gods, whose names the planets bear. The word planet means 'wanderer', so we too will wander in the orbits of the films we all like.
THE SUN is a symbol of beauty and joy, it empowers and energises. MERCURY - the messenger of the gods - is the planet of communication, intellect and travels. VENUS embodies love, harmony and femininity. EARTH represents stability, calmness and rationality. MARS represents energy, determination and action. JUPITER is the planet of expansion, wisdom and abundance. SATURN, the god of time, is associated with discipline and karma. It symbolizes overcoming obstacles and fulfillment. URANUS brings to mind originality, revolution and awakening, but also sudden change, development and life's freedom. NEPTUNE embodies intuition, transcendence and creative expression.
Letnie Tanie Kinobranie features films that have won prestigious awards (Poor Things, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall) and box-office hits (Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Top Gun: Maverick, Barbie). The programme includes the works by acclaimed auteurs from around the world, such as Wong Kar Wai, Ingmar Bergman, Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson and Hayao Miyazaki.
Intimate art films (Totem, 20000 Species of Bees, Houria) sit alongside representatives of genre cinema - including comedies (Drive-Away Dolls, Hit Man, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), science fiction (2046, Gravity, Blade Runner 2049), dramas (All of Us Strangers, Where the Crawdads Sing) and costume films (Jeanne du Barry, The Promised Land, Green Knight).
Kinobranie also has Polish accents, which confirm the good form of Polish cinema (Ultima Thule, Woman Of…, Filip, The Peasants). The programme consists also of documentaries (Pianoforte, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, Whale Nation, Songs of Earth) and eye-catching animations (Ghost in the Shell, Suzume and films from the Ghibli studio).
The summer film festival is filled with stars - the screen veterans who have been impressing us with their talent for decades (Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Willem Dafoe, Robert De Niro), artists with outstanding roles in their portfolio (Olivia Colman, Cillian Murphy, Ralph Fiennes, Kirsten Dunst) and young actors who are just beginning their professional journey (Margaret Qualley, Maya Hawke, Austin Butler, Cailee Spaeny).
Letnie Tanie Kinobranie also features two special sections. Kultowe Kinobranie (Cult Movies) presents timeless films that still evoke admiration despite the passage of time (Stranger Than Paradise, The Last Day of Summer, City of God). The second section - Rekomendacje Młodych Ambasadorów (Young Ambassadors' Recommendations) - was prepared together with a group of Young Ambassadors of Kino Pod Baranami, who shared their favourite titles.
The screenings of this year's festival will take place at Kino Pod Baranami (Rynek Glowny 27) and – from July 19 - in the big auditorium in Małopolska Garden of Arts (12 Rajska Street, level 0).
Twice a week screenings under the stars will be held in the garden at the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology (26 M. Konopnickiej St.). A detailed programme of outdoor screenings can be found on the Kino Pod Baranami website.
Twice, in July and August, a cinema poster archive will be opened during Plakatobranie (Film Posters 'Harvesting’). The festival trailer will be an invitation to a game of guessing the films edited in it. Thanks to the ZBIERAJ KINO action (Kinobranie loyalty program), watching more titles will be rewarded with free tickets (six watched films equals one free ticket). There will also be discounts from the festival's partners. A selection of films from the programme will be screened on Thursdays at 11.00 a.m. for parents with young children (Baranki w Pieluchach). All films are screened in original versions with Polish subtitles. Selected Polish and foreign films - with double, Polish and English, subtitles.
